Moon and Mountains
Woodblock print series exploring iterative image-making and material variation through repeated forms.
Iteration
Moons and Mountains was a series of woodblock prints exploring repeated forms as a method of visual study. By returning to the same compositional elements—the moon and mountainous landscape—I used iteration to examine texture, scale, and mark-making within the constraints of the medium of woodblock relief.
Process
The surface qualities of the moon, in particular, lend themselves to woodblock printing, allowing for close attention to texture and material variation. Across the series, shifts in color, registration, and composition reflect a process of refinement and observation.
This sustained focus on a single subject functions as a framework for developing technical precision while also investigating how subtle changes in form and surface can alter the perception of an image.
Showcase
Selected works from the series were shown at an exhibition titled Processes of Making Fall 2017 at Stamps Gallery Ann Arbor, MI.
The exhibition showcased works that exemplified iteration.
